A bacon sandwich is one of the most delicious sandwiches ever invented. Keeping it simple makes the bacon the star of the show!

If you are not British, but have been to the UK, you may have been surprised at the number of places where you saw a bacon sandwich, bacon roll, or bacon butty on the menu.

From food trucks on lay-bys (turnouts on highways), caravans at boot sales, pop ups, cafes and restaurants, Brits clearly love their bacon sandwiches, and they brought this fondness to Australia, too!

The bacon sandwiches Down Under were nothing to joke about, as you can see from the photo above and below! Their grocery store bacon was just as spectacular, and I would return to Australia simply for the bacon sandwiches!

Is a Bacon Sandwich a British Thing?

Given the history of the bacon sandwich as a portable meal for 19th century London factory workers (HuffPost), of course it is. However, as a dual citizen (British and American), I believe that the reason that a plain bacon sandwich is still a very British thing, and hasn’t crossed the pond in popularity is due to one thing.

Bacon is not cooked to a crisp in the UK as it is in the US. When bacon is cooked in Britain, it is still chewy, flexible and less cooked than in the United States (see the bacon in the photos). Therefore, if you were to make a plain bacon sandwich with American-style bacon, cooked to a crisp, it would be very difficult to eat it as the filling would be crunchy.

This is why I believe that in the US, bacon is more of an additional ingredient to burgers, and sandwiches like a BLT, or chicken bacon ranch sandwich. The other ingredients help the bacon to “stay put” in the sandwich.

There’s also the difference between streaky bacon and back bacon. In the US, we only have streaky bacon (pork belly) as opposed to back bacon, which has much less fat.

In searching for the history of the bacon sandwich, I happened to discover this fantastic business in London, called Le Swine (I even love the name!) The owner waxes poetic about all the different names of bacon sandwiches across Britain! I hope to visit next time I’m over, and already know what sandwich I would order besides a plain bacon butty: the bacon, egg and black pudding sandwich is for me!

Despite my love for plain bacon sandwiches, it doesn’t mean I don’t add bacon to other things like these club pinwheel sandwiches. You can find the picks, along with many other items I recommend on my Amazon shop.

Cook the bacon as desired. Air fry, grill or fry on a cooktop, but DO NOT MAKE THE BACON CRISPY if you want a British-style bacon sandwich.

I used back bacon for the photos, but regular (streaky) bacon is absolutely perfect, too. In fact, I prefer buying bacon made without added sugar, nitrates and nitrites.

Butter the bread with softened/room temperature butter.

Start putting the hot bacon on the bread, on one half only.

Add as much bacon as you like, but at least two slices are needed.

At this point, add some brown sauce (my favorite is HP Sauce), if desired. This is optional, and I personally never add it, but I adore HP (so much so, that I actually order the 2 liter HP Sauce. And have even ordered the 4 liter catering size HP Sauce in the past!)

Place the other slice of bread on top of the bacon.

Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labor, enjoy that brilliant bacon sandwich (or bacon roll if you so desire.)
